Vice TV asked me to develop a doc series around the idea of fandom — sneakerheads, ren faire, etc. Personally, not much interested me about collectors or cosplayers. I was more intersted in what happens when passion turns into obsession, replete with all the murky consquences? I counter-pitched an idea centered around fanaticism called The Deep End. Working with series host and Vice News correspondent Alice Hines, the idea was to unjudgmentally delve into the lives of people and subcultures for whom the line between passion and obsession is tenuous at best. And it was also another opportunity to explore my abiding interest in adult make-believe. Fortunately, this was all pure Vice, and the show was greenlit and delivered in six hectic months — during peak pandemic. And no one ever got Covid!
