I pitched and wrote this essay/chart for The Believer after listening to a lot of sad soul music and reading up about the sad soul brothers behind it. The tortured wailing of Little Johnny Taylor, Teddy Hawkins, the Bayou Maharajah, and others wasn’t some act — it was real.
