Within VICE Media, Vice News on HBO was an older, more mature sibling. The subject matter of the show was still culturally resonant, but very much reported within the strictures of legacy journalism. Still, I was known in the newsroom as the “weird story guy.” A gathering of the flat-earth faithful wasn’t the strangest thing I ever pitched, but I knew we’d meet some great characters — and also speak to a larger story about misinformation, fanaticism, and the erosion of trust in science and institutions.
